How To Know When You Need an Air Conditioning Replacement

Even the most durable air conditioner will eventually break down, regardless of how well it is maintained. So, how do you know when your air conditioner is ready to quit? Here’s what to watch for.

  • Age: The most common sign that your air conditioner needs replacing is age. The average AC lifespan is approximately 15 years. As your system nears the end, it’s best to plan on replacing it before it fails amid summer.
  • Freon: The production and import of refrigerant R22 was banned in the US in January 2020 over environmental concerns. While it’s still legal to get from existing stock, it’s getting harder to find and, as such, has become very expensive. In most cases, contractors who possess R22 tend only to allocate it for use with larger commercial systems. In contrast, an immediate equipment replacement is not a viable solution for a down system. If your residential system uses R22, replacing the entire system when you have a refrigerant leak is more cost-effective.
  • Frequent Repairs: Spending more on annual air conditioner repairs is a sign that the system is past its prime, and you’re better off investing in a new, more reliable unit.
  • More Expensive Repairs: Like frequent repairs, if the parts are getting more expensive to get and the bills are rising, or the system is out of warranty, consider replacing it.

Turn to our team to assess your system and recommend which way to go if you’re on the fence about AC replacement.
